Retention and Chunking free essay sample
Memory is one of the important roles of the mind. However, it is often disregarded, unless needed. People typically do not think about memory except when they really need to retrieve or recall important details. People usually think about memory only when it fails them. Memory refers to the processes that are used to acquire, store, retain and later retrieve information. It is a function that is basic and integral to all cognitive and psychological activities. There are three major processes involved in memory: encoding, storage and retrieval. In order to form new memories, information must be changed to usable form, which occurs through the process known as encoding. Once information has been successfully encoded, it must be stored in memory for later use. Much of this stored memory lies outside of our awareness most of the time, except when we actually need to use it. The retrieval process allows us to bring stored memories into conscious awareness. We will write a custom essay sample on Retention and Chunking or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page There are many ways of classifying the human mind and its ability to retain information. One of the most often used classifications are based on the duration of memory retention, specifically the sensory, long term memory and short term memory which is our focus in this report. In Freudian psychology, the short term memory (STM) would be referred to as the conscious mind. Paying attention to sensory memories generates the information in STM. Most of the information stored in working memory will be stored for approximately 20 to 30 seconds. While many of our STMs are quickly forgotten, attending to this information allows it to continue on the next stage, long-term memory. However, there are different control processes that can be applied once the information is transferred into the short term memory. Two of these are rehearsal and chunking. Rehearsal is the mental repetition of information to retain longer in STM. This is the way to keep the information in STM refreshed even if it is stored in the STM for a relatively long period of time; that is if one keeps rehearsing the information. On the other hand, chunking is a unit of memory, where overcoming STMs that can be remembered or retained are five-to-nine nformation. A chunk could refer to digits, words, chess positions, or peoples faces. The concept of chunking and the limited capacity of short term memory became a basic element of all subsequent theories of memory. According to Ebbinghaus, short term memory was postulated to explain temporary retention of information as distinct from long term retention of information. Short term memory acts to also store current sensory information and to rehearse new information from sensory buffers and has limited capacity. Loss of information stored in short term memory has the same characteristics as loss of information stored in long term memory. It happens quicker because it involves information that is not learned as well. What we call the learning process is transferring information from short term to long term memory and is a physiological process. Retention is the persistence to perform a learned behavior (facts or experiences) after an interval has elapsed in which there has been no performance or practice of the behavior.Individuals can briefly recall short lists, but as the lists increases in length, participants will need more time to recall the lists. The number that can be recalled before errors begin to occur is called the memory span, and it has been interpreted as the limit on the storage space available in STM (Klatzky, 1975). As more items enter STM, the strength of previous information fades away. In cognitive psychology and mnemonics, chunking refers to a strategy for making more efficient use of STM by recording information.

Nick Stephenson on Reader Magnets and Amazon SEO Reedsy
Nick Stephenson on Reader Magnets and Amazon SEO Reedsy Reader Magnets and Amazon SEO - Nick Stephenson on Author Marketing Last update: 07/06/2017ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ve got to think about what the benefit is for the reader.â⬠This is what author marketing is all about, according to bestselling author Nick Stephenson, who we have the pleasure of interviewing today. We first reached out to Nick over a year ago, when he had started implementing this mindset and his reader magnets technique. In a year, he has built a hugely profitable business out of his writing career, hitting bestsellers lists, writing full-time, and now offering a premium marketing training program for authors: "Your First 10k Readers".He shares his insights on email lists, incentives (reader magnets), reviews, and Amazon search engine optimization. If you want 24 minutes of exceptionally condensed marketing advice, just hit ââ¬Å"playâ⬠below. For the lovers of the written word, we also provide, as always, a nice, clean transcript. Enjoy! Hi Nick, great to have you here! Youââ¬â¢re a UK bestselling indie author of crime and thrillers. Can you give us a bit of background on what your books are about? Thanks for having me. I write mystery and thrillers, the Leopold Blake series, and I write non-fiction as well: books specifically designed to help authors find their first 10,000 readers and build their platform. My fiction work is based on a modern-day Sherlock Holmes character and is great fun. Itââ¬â¢s all based in the US, with American characters and American language. There are 6 books in the series; Iââ¬â¢ve been publishing for about two years now and started seeing some amazing results about 12 months ago, when I started really focusing on building my marketing strategy and on what works. Itââ¬â¢s been a very exciting year or so for me.I can imagine. And itââ¬â¢s actually a year ago that I first got in touch with you to present you the idea we had about Reedsy, so Iââ¬â¢d say itââ¬â¢s been a gre at year for both of us!Absolutely, yes! Itââ¬â¢s great to see so many emerging authors and services to help grow this industry, because itââ¬â¢s such a new market! Itââ¬â¢s just great to see all this exciting stuff happening.Exciting is definitely the word! You also have a free webinar on the Your First 10k Readers website that I really enjoyed, especially the first video, because that video starts by effectively setting the right mindset for book marketing. I see many authors out there thinking ââ¬Å"how can I sell my booksâ⬠, when it should actually all be about adopting a readerââ¬â¢s perspective.Absolutely. I think the problem with a lot of authors, like you said, is that they see marketing as a problem, when marketing can be fun as well! Because when youââ¬â¢re building a real connection with your fans, you get to have that exchange of ideas. Getting emails from people telling you how much they love your books and how they canââ¬â¢t wait for your next on e, every day, is a wonderful feeling. And when you have a next book to launch, knowing that you can launch it into the top 200 on Amazon, go to the top of the charts on your bestseller lists, without having to pay for advertising, that is amazing, because you have this built-in platform that you have direct control over. Whereas if youââ¬â¢re relying on Amazon or other ebook stores, or even Facebook, to do that for you, the rules can change at any minute.Thatââ¬â¢s because you donââ¬â¢t own that platform: itââ¬â¢s their platform, so they can change the rules. But if you have your own platform, you donââ¬â¢t have to worry about that: you control it, and therefore control your career. So my premium training is all based around how to develop that for yourself and how to build that up, so you can take control over being an author. The webinar you mention are the free videos that I show to people to let them know exactly what they can do to get this process started. There a re currently 3 videos and you can sign up for them at Your First 10k Readers. The first one will essentially take you through how the online retailers work. And this is a big one because most authors think about marketing like old school, traditional marketing that publishers used to do (and some still do), where itââ¬â¢s all about the physical bookstores.Itââ¬â¢s nothing like that, because Amazon and the other stores are really search engines. Theyââ¬â¢re like Google for products, Google for books. And if you donââ¬â¢t understand how a search engine works, how it indexes books and pages and how you can get to the top of those search results, youââ¬â¢re leaving a lot of visibility on the table. So I talk about exactly how to get that right mindset. So how can authors do SEO (Search Engine Optimization)? How should they, for example, decide which keywords to enter for their book?Itââ¬â¢s difficult I think, because Amazon and the other retailers donââ¬â¢t publish th eir search traffic. If youââ¬â¢re on Google, you can go to the Google Keywords tool, type some keywords and see how much traffic they get, what the competition is like, etc. Amazon doesnââ¬â¢t do this, they keep it very much to themselves, so youââ¬â¢ve got to be manual about it - you have to use a bit of common sense. The easiest way to do it is to use the search bar at the top of the book page and start typing in some relevant search terms that you think might apply. Amazon will suggest some for you, so you just pick some suggested terms and check out whether the books listed under those terms are selling well. If they are, itââ¬â¢s a good keyword, so you have to determine whether you can compete at that level of sales. So if youââ¬â¢re currently selling one copy a day, you donââ¬â¢t want to be in a keyword pool of books that are selling hundreds of copies a day. Itââ¬â¢s a lot of manual work, trial and error, but keywords are so important.Do your recommend cha nging them often and testing/iterating?It depends, I donââ¬â¢t change mine that often. If I see my sales drop, Iââ¬â¢ll go back and check, but really there is no kind of set that you want to change them out, thereââ¬â¢s no magic answer. One post I really liked on your blog was the one about readers magnets. Because often, I finish an indie book and I read something like ââ¬Å"we indie authors rely on reviews/on our newsletter, so please leave a review/subscribe to my newsletterâ⬠, and that to me is not a real incentive. You, however, offer a real incentive. Can you tell us more about these reader magnets?Yes, youââ¬â¢ve got to think about what the benefit is for the reader. Because if you put a call to action at the end of your book like ââ¬Å"buy the next bookâ⬠or ââ¬Å"subscribe to my mailing listâ⬠or ââ¬Å"leave a reviewâ⬠, the readerââ¬â¢s thinking: ââ¬Å"whatââ¬â¢s in it for me? Why should I do that?â⬠I mean, some people will do it, of course, but most people will just completely ignore that. What you have to do to get more results is offer the reader something for them, something of value, to get them to take action. And personally Iââ¬â¢d rather have them subscribe to my mailing list than anything else. Because if you get their email address and get their consent for you to contact them in the future, you can ask them for reviews or sales later on down the line, when youââ¬â¢ve built up that brand and that relationship. And this is where reader magnets really come in.Reader magnets are basically something of value that you give to your readers in exchange for an email address. That has made a tremendous difference. Weââ¬â¢re talking more than a 1000% increase in signups, just from doing that. I offer them a book as a magnet, a full book (either another book in the series, or a related book if itââ¬â¢s a non-fiction book), but you donââ¬â¢t have to offer a full book, you can offer bonus chapt ers, deleted scenes; or in non-fiction: cheat sheets, case studies, videos, anything you want as long as itââ¬â¢s related to the book that the reader has just finished. It just makes all the difference because with reader magnets youââ¬â¢re thinking about what is in it for your readers, not whatââ¬â¢s in it for you.Exactly, I think that is definitely the key in marketing. And itââ¬â¢s funny because in January, weââ¬â¢ve seen a couple of indie author stars like Hugh Howey or Joanna Penn posting videos about their reading habits and how they find their next reads. It shows that they have this right mindset: they easily put themselves into their readersââ¬â¢ shoes because they are readers themselves.Absolutely, and they build a connection with their readers that way. Iââ¬â¢m always going to make as much effort as possible to build a connection with readers, because from a readerââ¬â¢s point of view, youââ¬â¢ve got a book out there but they have no idea who you are, they donââ¬â¢t know what your life story is, what their personality is, all they know is your book.If youââ¬â¢re publishing videos like Joanna Penn and Hugh Howey, you really build that connection and readers start to understand who you are as a person. And then theyââ¬â¢re much more likely to buy from you because theyââ¬â¢re invested in your success: they feel like they know you.Another great thing about indie authors is the community theyââ¬â¢ve built, and the collaborations that emerge between authors. Youââ¬â¢ve been working very closely yourself with Matt Iden, another author in your genre, right?I think collaboration is absolutely key, because this kind of old school mentality of ââ¬Å"book launch is the be all and end allâ⬠is gone, you know. It used to be that where your book didnââ¬â¢t sell 20 or 30 thousand copies in the first three months, your publisher would either drop you or reduce your advances, or be less invested in marketing your n ext book. The indie mentality is different because we donââ¬â¢t rely on huge sales in the beginning, we can be happy with a few hundred sales in the first month, or a few dozen, or even ten!Weââ¬â¢re not ââ¬Å"in competitionâ⬠, because we donââ¬â¢t have to compete for shelf space with this or that bestseller during launch week: weââ¬â¢re available forever. So we can actually work with other authors to benefit everybody because in the end we all have the same objective, which is to reach more readers and get our work out into the world. And thereââ¬â¢s no reason we canââ¬â¢t do that together: I email out my audience all the time, and if Iââ¬â¢ve got nothing of my own to promote, Iââ¬â¢ll recommend other authorsââ¬â¢ books. I want my readers to trust me so if I can give them something good to read thatââ¬â¢s a great way of doing it!Another thing I wanted to discuss was your brand, that youââ¬â¢ve built across the years, and that is particularly e vident in your covers. Would you say that branding is one of your selling points or is it just there to support your other marketing activities?Branding is very important because it basically means that your readers know what to expect. Your name is a brand, so if someone is going to read the next Nick Stephenson book, they should understand what thatââ¬â¢s going to be like. From a visual point of view, having those covers, almost identical across the series, means that when theyââ¬â¢re scrolling through a list of books, they immediately know it when they see a Nick Stephenson book. And if they look at it, theyââ¬â¢ll see the ââ¬Å"also boughtâ⬠at the bottom of the page and there will be all my covers lined up. And on my website they can see them in a banner too. It creates a very strong visual trigger that gets people excited about looking at your books. One of the most important things you should do is have a nice, professional cover, and if youââ¬â¢re writing in a series, having those covers match as closely as possible can make a very big difference.Do you do ââ¬Å"perma-freeâ⬠on the first book in the series?Yes, I do, and there is a reason for this. We talked about ebook stores being like search engines, right? Well, this is like any other online business, you need two things: traffic, and conversion (turning traffic into customers).Perma-free is a wonderful way to get traffic, because you can get 50x to 100x more downloads on a book if it is free, compared to if it was even 99c. Then, if youââ¬â¢re smart about it, you can find ways to convert that traffic into paying customers (using reader magnets, typically).Even if you donââ¬â¢t do perma-free you can do regular free promotions if youââ¬â¢re enrolled in KDP Select, and use those 5 days every 90 days when your book is free to really promote it. Youââ¬â¢ll get subscribers that way that you can then lead on to your other books. It just makes a huge difference. One thing Iââ¬â¢ve noticed in the latest numbers you disclosed about your expenditures for your books, is that youââ¬â¢re not afraid to spend money as long as it brings more back. Iââ¬â¢ve heard that youââ¬â¢ve even tried Facebook ads, is that right?Yes, I do, even if I didnââ¬â¢t include it in the breakdown (Iââ¬â¢d only been doing it for a couple of months). Itââ¬â¢s like anything, you know, if you want to take your business to the next level, youââ¬â¢re not going to be able to do it using free marketing tools, or a $5 add.Iââ¬â¢m not saying that you cannot have sales without paid marketing, Iââ¬â¢ve started making serious money from publishing without really spending that much money. But you hit a plateau pretty quickly. And if you want to go to the next level, you really need to think about how you can invest in your own business. Then, itââ¬â¢s not about cost, itââ¬â¢s about how much value that investment is going to bring. If itââ¬â¢s going to earn you money, save you money, or save you time, then itââ¬â¢s a good investment.Facebook ads have been absolutely incredible. Aiming it at my non-fiction author marketing side of things (and advertising my free Reader Magnets book), Iââ¬â¢m getting subscribers through Facebook ads that cost me around a dollar, but theyââ¬â¢re earning me around $15, so itââ¬â¢s just an incredible amount of ROI. I actually donââ¬â¢t think that will last forever, Facebook will catch on to how much money people are making through this, and prices will go up. But while itââ¬â¢s like that, itââ¬â¢s just fantastic! Thanks for these insights, Nick, and for your time!à For more insider tips on author marketing, check out our free Reedsy learning courses on marketing. How do you build your mailing list? Do you use any reader magnets? Leaves us your author marketing thoughts and tips in the comments below! And donââ¬â¢t hesitate to ask Nick Stephenson any questions!

Week 5 Forum Bay of Pigs Failure Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Week 5 Forum Bay of Pigs Failure - Assignment Example The location of the invasion was also very inappropriate considering the lack of an escape route at Bay of Pigs. The location had been chosen quite hurriedly without a consideration of many factors. It proved very hard for the attackers to escape and engage the government in guerrilla warfare. President Kennedy was much worried about an obvious involvement of America in the operation and therefore supplied the operation with only sixteen obsolete aircraft. However, this was done without a consideration of the Cuban fleet. Another major mistake arose when against the advice of the military officials the President reduced the initial fleet from sixteen to eight. That decision was an indication that the whole operation was headed for failure. At the planning stage, the Secretary of Defense actually admitted that the plan was bound to fail considering the haphazard manner in which the operations were conducted. It was much important to totally focus on destroying the Cuban air force at the outset of the operation. However, this was impossible considering the limited attacking fleet1. Part of the failure of the invasion is attributed to the poor coordination between intelligence and operations. Indeed, it is seen that Kennedy did not have much knowledge on intelligence related affairs and did not therefore regard it as essential. For the success of such an operation, much information should have been gathered on the Cuban regime. Information on the training of the solders, demography and the defense ability of the military should have been gathered effectively. It was important to have a close association between intelligence and operations so as to provide the necessary preparation and preparedness for the invasion. Indeed, the fear of exposure was the major concern of America in the whole operation. In this case, everything was done with a need to ensure that such exposure was not possible. However, this was also the major cause of failure in the

Critically assess how international investment law should be modified Essay
Critically assess how international investment law should be modified to address the growth of foreign direct investment from em - Essay Example The trend indicates an increase in FDI outflows from emerging markets. During the 1980s, FDI outflows from emerging markets were approximately US$50 billion annually. Since that time the FDI outflows have increase exponentially. For example in 2007 the FDI outflows from emerging markets was US$2.1 trillion and despite the economic downturn in 2008, the FDI outflows from emerging markets was US$1.9 trillion.5 This trend is also indicative of the fact that emerging markets are becoming pivotal players in the global economy.6 It has been argued that the best method for improving FDI inflows to emerging markets is for both realistic and credible commitments to both domestic and international reforms toward liberalising capital markets.7 This is particularly important because states wishing to attract FDI inflows are responsible for regulating their domestic investment laws. The manner in which national laws and national market reforms are made are marginally influenced by ââ¬Å"internat ional legal obligations or by economic necessity.â⬠8 International legal obligations are directed by treaty obligations which are usually in the form of Bilateral International Treaties (BITs).9 Multinational trade agreements such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) and Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs) also regulate how members states must treat foreign investors, thus enabling greater mobility of capital across borders.10 Since the 1990s, BITs between emerging markets and between emerging markets and developed states have increased exponentially.11 The main difficulty is that there is no ââ¬Å"single modelâ⬠setting forth what should encompass international investment law relative to FDIs.12 Given the complexity of FDIs, and the risks and uncertainties, the need to balance the rights and duties of foreign investors requires some degree of unity between states.13 A more cohesive international investment law regime is also necessary for levelling the playing field be tween competing emerging markets and between emerging markets and developed states.14 This research study investigates the complexities of FDIs, its significance to economic growth and development in emerging markets and argues that there is a need for the implementation of international investment laws to balance the competing rights and obligations of host state and foreign investor. This is particularly important for ensuring that emerging states benefit from the potential of FDIs to help these state develop and grow in economically and politically significant ways. The challenge under investigation in this study is the extent to which international investment law should be modified to prevent the exponential growth of FDI outflows from emerging markets and to encourage further growth of FDI inflows to emerging markets. International Investment Law Regulating FDIs Bilateral Investment Treat Law Since the 1990s there has been a significant increase in the number of bilateral forei gn investment treaties (BITs).15 Studies show that BITs have increased the flow of FDIs to emerging markets particularly those in South-East Asia.16 There is also evidence of an increase in FDI outflows from and

Fiber optics Lab Report Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Fiber optics - Lab Report Example Each of the strands is a tenth less as thick as the strand of a human hair and it is capable of carrying approximated ten million calls. The cables are able to carry information from one point to another using the optical technology. The technology has been applied in many companies of telecommunications to transmit various telephone signals, television signals of cables and various communications in the internet. The fiber optics is more advantageous compared to existing copper wire that results from lower level of attenuation and also interference. This occurs in various long distances and in high demand applications. However, there have been various challenges resulting from development of infrastructure in cities making it time consuming and expensive to install the fiber optics (Meà ndez and Morse 165). As a result, fiber optics has been primarily installed in long distances where it is possible to maximize their full capacity of transmission. This has resulted into a decreased price of installing the fiber optic
